Oncidium novice help

Hi,

So I finally decided to branch out and try my hand at other orchids, I have a collection of 11 phals which are all doing great (two currently in bloom and another 8 in spike).

So at the local nursery I picked up two cattleyas and an oncidium. One cattleya is tagged, the other one wasn't except for saying it was red/green. And thr oncidium just had a tag saying it was yellow oncidium.

So my question is since I don't know what type of oncidium it is how should I treat it? I repotted it in a bark mix with a very little bit of sphagnum, I have it on a window sill so it gets allot of sun. I've had it for a good month and I'm keeping a close eye on it for signs of too much light but so far I think it is looking good.

Then yesterday I notice it had new growth. But I can't tell if it is a spike or a new bulb, and I see it is putting out a new root too.

Any tips I can get would be great!! It's about 10" tall to where the leaves naturally swoop down.

The bulb has three leaves on it, the growth is coming from the bottom smallest leaf on the right.

Oncidiums are a joy to care for. They are relatively low maintenance, just keep an eye on the pbulbs. If they start to wrinkle it is receiving too little water. Other than that they are not too picky about light or temps. (At least mine are not) good luck and happy growing.

Well that's encouraging! I have been watching the pbulbs on both the catts and the oncidium, they seem to be quite happy, even with the repotting. They were all in the typical sphagnum moss, the oncidium had bark around a core of sphagnum. So I thought they might throw a fit to be put into bark, which is why I was so surprised to see growth!!

Well the one in the pic looks happy to me. When mine are in growing phase I fertilize every other watering as well.

How often do you water? Mine are in new bark mix which I know dries out quicker. I can see moisture in the very bottom of the pot so I'm thinking to hold off until that's gone, which seems to be about every 3rd or 4th day or so. I'll remember to fertilize next watering too.

It's really up to the orchid, I was doing once a week but right now they are liking every 3-4 days. I'm not fertilizing right now because I'm either in spike or bloom on all of them.

That's a spike on that Oncidium. Congrats and enjoy the anticipation!
