Bc Little Mermaid - New growths?
Howdy,
This Brassocatanthe Little Mermaid, which incidentally I got 8 months ago through Orchidboard, is starting to show some signs of life!
My question is, are these little purple nubbins new growths? I ask because they are quite far up on the pseudobulb and I'm not all that familiar with Cattleya types.

Yes, those are new growths. Many Catts do creep upward similar to the way some Oncidiums do although not usually quite as bad. My Little Mermaid is getting new growths now too.

I just looked at my journal in OrchidWiz. For mine, I had some new growths started last spring and by July they were large and opening up their leaves. Soon after I could see a sheath and they bloomed in Nov. Pretty fast development compared to some Catts.

It was a first bloom for mine and I got about 6 blooms (2 spikes). They lasted really long too. I was really pleased with it. |

Well, those are not new growths, but dormant eyes that have potential to grow into new growths.
Those are not the primary dormant eyes, which are located one or more nodes below.
When the primary dormant eyes get damaged, these other ones would sprout into new growths.
Each cattleya lead has about three dormant eyes usually.

The reason I posted about them is because they have noticeably swollen in the past couple of weeks. I will follow up in a month or two if there is any more growth.

Then, they must be on their way to wake up.
Something must have gone wrong with the primary eyes further down then.

I call them growths because they have turned purple and look like they are awake. I have a number of Catts where the new growth starts that high up. No damage to other eyes I am sure.
