Central Texas - Recommended Orchid Varieties
Thumbs up Central Texas - Recommended Orchid Varieties

Looking for advice on recommended varieties for relatively easy growth in central texas (hot/humid/bright light) zone 8b (and could always/ will have to bring in for winter when starting to get below 40F)

I have had some success but mostly have really struggled with orchids in the few years I've kept them (originally in PA) despite tons of care and culture research.

I was a big fan of the fragrant Zygopetalum Midnight I had and it was pretty easy overall but I killed it on a really busy year. Not sure how they would do down here.

Recommended Cymbidium types for warm blooming flowers would be much appreciated as well.

Would appreciate any advice on recommended varieties. I don't necessarily have a ton of time for constant maintenance plants (very busy, 2 young kids etc), so the less the better (tolerant of less watering etc - we have plenty of humidity and bright light)

Note - If you can recommend good places to buy them (prices and quality/health), that would be much appreciated as well - fellow board members would be great as I think part of the problem was the plants I acquired not being the best sources.

Thanks for the help!
-Josh

Cattleyas would be a good fit to my knowledge as they enjoy warm and sunny growing conditions and actually enjoy being outside from what I have read. Also. Vandas from what I have read would enjoy those conditions as well.

Vanda does seem like an ideal choice. Don't know if Cattleya would work as I can't provide this...
"The ideal day temperature is 75-85 degrees F., while the ideal night temperature is 60-65 degrees F. Occasional temperature extremes are tolerated if exposure is not prolonged."

it's get's way hotter than that in central texas for extended periods of time (all summer, lol) and are nights would not be that low in summer unless a coldfront came through.
