Default Vanda set up

I haven't been on orchid board since 2008! So much has happened since then- long story short, we started a family and my addiction to orchids was put on pause. I searched my username and skimmed through my old posts- it almost seems like a different person wrote those! I have forgotten most of my content knowledge about orchids and I'm starting from scratch.

I went to the local orchid show last weekend and I purchased a Vanda. I don't have a greenhouse, which will be a pursuit of mine in the future, but from what I remember and what I read, it thrives in bright light, high humidity, and needs air circulation. I put the roots in a terrarium with water on the bottom. I am thinking of buying a fogger disc online. The door opens to the terrarium and I have a ceiling fan on in the room. The window in the room faces West and I live in Tucson, so plenty of sunshine.

What are your guys' thoughts? Honesty is always appreciated

Welcome Back!

I like that setup.
You might want to look at the sticky Vandas in Glass Vases.
It is a method that many have had success with.

I tried the vase idea but it was way too restrictive on the roots, so now my vandas 'go commando'.

Welcome back!

That seems an interesting set up, though I'd be wondering what else I can fill the terrarium with! I just got my first Vanda at a show and heard the glass vase idea as well as putting the roots in a clay pot and watering them that way. At present I put it in the shower for a couple of minutes in the morning and then hand in a south window. This summer I'll put it outside. It's two open blooms and two buds but I see the youngest smallest bud is blasting now. Dunno if it's from the afternoon light or adjustment to new conditions.

I've also heard to wrap the roots in moss, in that case the person said if you go on vacation, but I'm wondering if that'd be good period!

Good luck, keep us posted. It's a pretty plant.

Aren't Vandas attractive? I like the idea of moss! I will have to see what's available here. Thanks!

Well, I did wrap some Spanish Moss round the roots. So far everything seems fine, and it seems to like the watering regime for the Vandas. The SM does have a very open structure, - I don't know if Sphagnum moss would be too dense?

Vandas are so beautiful.

Bil that's great to know! I'll have to look for some spanish moss and give it a try as well.
