Last year at my first Orchid Society meeting, I ended up with a cute little Dendrobium nobile.

A while later, I was poking around in the pot and noticed that one cane was dead at the base.

I cut off the dead part and planted the cane in a pot of sphagnum to see what it would do. It eventually developed two keikis, one before the other.

They slowly grew over the summer, but after I took the plants inside for the cold weather, I got kind of neglectful and the cane eventually died, along with the smaller keiki, and I decided it was time to separate the bigger one, since it couldn't have been getting any benefit from being attached to a dead thing.
