Orchid for a terrarium?
Question Orchid for a terrarium?

I've got a 5 gallon jug, and would like to insert a orchid seedling through a 1" hole at the top. I'm also using wine corks as a substrate, not really a growing medium, and will get other growing medium to go along with it.

I'm told that orchids might not tolerate the stagnant air and high humidity in a terrarium. I'd still like to give it a try.

So my questions:
1. What orchid is most likely to thrive in these conditions?
2. Where can I find a small seedling?
3. What would be a good growing medium to compliment the corks? It's my understanding the corks aren't likely to break down much.

Thanks!

You might want to call Andy's Orchids and ask them what would work. They sell quite a few orchids labeled for a viv. I am not sure if these would need a fan, though.
I grow a Haraella rectrocalla, a miniature orchid, in a small, enclosed container about the size of a one-serving yogurt container. It is happy there. Andy's sells them.

There's a whole section of OB dedicated to this topic. I bet you'll find your answer there

I'd look into mini and micro mini orchids.
There's a few great setups there.
Tommymiami has quite a few setups that are just gorgeous

I myself have a set up that's almost completely closed.
Maybe check it out and get some ideas.
My thread is called "nightstand lantern" and I highly recommend you check out TommyMiami's Hygrolon cylinder.
I believe both are in the mini show and tell section.

Here's a list of orchids that love being in my wet, stagnant lantern.
Lepanthopsis astrophora.
This ones a great bloomer, loves stagnant conditions.
Haraella retrocalla, same as above.
Lepanthes telipogoniflora.
Very easy to grow, loves the high humidity. I was very surprised how easy actually.
Pluerothallis calyprostele.
Gifted to me by a member. Hasn't bloomed yet, but it grows like a madman. It's on the wettest, most stagnant part of my lantern.

My medium is lava rock though.

I get my minis from Andy's orchids, and Seattle orchids.
Highly recommend them both.

haha. That was not showing up on a google search, or else I wasn't using the right terms. Perfect.

Thanks. I was going to have one average sized orchid, but 3 smaller ones might do nicely.
