Default Cat nibbled Phal roots

Hi all, I'm new to the boards. I have a phal that I bought last year and, amazingly to me, it survived the summer, grew a new leaf, and sent out a spike in the Fall. However, just recently one of my cats chewed on some (three?) of its roots. One or two are completely gone and another had just the outside eaten off part of it. So, just how hardy are Phals? It seems to be keepin' on keepin' on, but was this enough to kill its spike?

Phals are the hard men of orchids, even I can grow them and I have no double glazing!
