I don't normally stake my spikes. In this case, should i?
NoId oncidium in spike. Just over 1.5ft tall. Im worried about it toppling once buds start to form.

You can if you want, but it's only growing that way to get more light. As long as the blooms don't get wet the spike should hold up nicely.

It sure is a sun thirsty Onc. It gets 4 hrs of direct light in the morning, and then dappled light throughout the day. If you zoom in on the pic, you might be able to see a reddish hue on the spike. |

Odontoidas do have a rather long spike, and many pretty color combinations. They do make good background plants because the spike is so high.

Why havent i posted pics of the blooms? Because the stupid wind knocked it off the shelf and snapped the spike. I cried real tears.
Thank goodness it bounced back. It has fallen off the shelf 6 more times (not joking) since then, until i finally put rocks at the bottom of the pot.

It has been my experience that the spikes of oncidiums and the oncid. intergenerics are fairly strong despite their thin appearance. I used to spike them all the time, but now I only spike them when I have issues with balance (like you have) and I spike them and weigh down the pot they are in to combat the top-heavyness. Looks like it really wants to keep pushing through and bloom! Let us know how the flowers turn out!
