New root on spike and dark spots on leaves of a phal
Default New root on spike and dark spots on leaves of a phal

Hi all,
An update on the humpty dumpty phal of this post.

I did lose 3 flowers due to repotting and 1-2 buds blasted, but all in all the phal is doing great. At least 5 new flowers opened recently! I'm attaching some pictures for you all. I have two quick questions.

1. See first picture - it looks like it's putting out a new aerial root, but it's coming off of the spike? Is this normal? Anything I should be doing to keep the new root healthy and plump? My other phal lost all of the aerial roots due to lack of humidity, should I be misting this new root?

2. See second picture - I noticed the underside of the leaves has some dark spots. What could be causing this and should I do anything about it?

The remaining two pictures are of the flowers, you can see the blasted bud(s) on the last photo, as well as the new pot it's now in. All in all, I feel it's doing well, all things considered.

Looks good to me!

Phals like doing that sending aerial roots. It is just growing a little near the spike. I just water same time as I water the rest of the root zone. It will eventually lengthen. It may still decide to bury itself into the media or maybe not. Either way, it is okay. Just be mindful you do not water the crown of your Phal.

As to the black spots on the underside of the leaves, if it is not spreading or getting bigger or like starting to look wet and oozing, I will just leave it be. It maybe just mechanical damage during handling.

You still got beautiful blooms left! Enjoy!

You can try using isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and see if that takes the black spots off. If it is just a but of surface mold that should take care of it.

If the spots don't spread I wouldn't worry. I get the odd black spots on mine and it's generally nothing to worry about.

The new ariel root is certainly near the spike. I wouldn't go digging to see where it is actually coming from. Looks good!
