At first I don't think the plant was doing well. I had some extra charcoal left over so I added a few to two top of it.
I checked the progress a month later and all the roots spiraled to the top of the plant. Now again a month later I checked and it was piling around and around the top where I added the charcoal. I experimented and added a few at the bottom and the roots went down.
I fertilize it weakly and misting between watering. I pulled it out today so I could see what medium was left and it was all roots about 95% and 8% perlite ,2% broken up bark or fine mix.
I cut it into 3 plants which it seemed healthy enough because it's going like a weed. My question is if it like charcoal , I don't know where to purchase it from as I had it left over from a mix at Home Depot.
I should have taken a photo because I wasn't sure if it was ok to repot.

You can get a large bag of hardwood charcoal from Home Depot or Lowes. You can usually find small grade charcoal at aquarium stores of nurseries. I have seen it from time to time in HD or Lowes too. I buy it in the large bag for around $25 and use it for grilling as well as orchid mix. Years ago before bark became the rage orchid growers used charcoal alone as it was inexpensive and didn't break down.
