Is this Dendrobium ok?
Default Is this Dendrobium ok?

I haven't had this plant but for a month or so. I noticed a couple of days ago that some of the lower leaves are turning yellow.

I don't think I am overwatering, since I'm sticking to a 10 day to 2 week schedule. Not sure about the light, though, as the tag that came with it says low light, but everything else I read about dens says bright light.

I also can't tell how dry/wet it is due to the piece of wood (?) that it is planted in.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

It looks like a healthy plant. It may just be an older leaf getting ready to drop from old age.

Your watering schedule sounds right.

FYI - I think it would rather have high light levels.

Thanks, Maureen. It has lovely flowers. I did lose a few buds, but most bloomed.

I have two choices for light: east facing window, which due to palm trees, does not get much light. West facing lanai, which this time of year, gets pretty much low light, till about 3:30 or 4:00 till sunset. It is currently on the lanai, so it gets the same sun as my Phals (which seem fine).

Would light from the setting sun (winter, in Florida) be too strong to leave it out on the lanai? I bring the phals in from 4 till sunset.

My similar dendrobiums are currently getting full sun most of the day on a south facing windowsill but I'm further north than you are so the sun is at a much lower angle.
If you are in doubt, the best thing to do is to feel the leaves during the time you are wondering about.
If they feel very warm/hot then you know it's not going to work. I give mine as much light as they can tolerate without burning them.
