I had been purchasing lots of houseplants back when I first moved out....I was about 20 at the time. For years I was always looking at the orchids and saying to my mom, "oh I wish I could grow those!! I love them soooooooo much!" Then I decided to take the plunge one day and I purchased one....it was a Phal. Then of course it spiraled out of control from there, LOL! Bought another....then another....then a few!! LOL!
Now I'm in full addiction!

I got a phal Flare Spots at a local garden fair 5 years ago, OH nearly passed out when I told him how much it cost, but it flowered for 6 months and he was impressed! The same fair is on this weekend and I bought 3 flowering plants and 3 babies and OH didn't turn a hair! I suppose I have 12 now but I shall keep increasing till I run out of space! Judi

My first orchid was a nearly-dead phal that I rescued from a plant sell. It just sat on a windowsill forever and I decided that I just wasn't one of those people who were lucky enough to grow orchids.
A year or two later, January of '06, I was in Home Depot and spotted a beautiful yellow NOID phal. Outside the store the landscape was covered in ugly sludgy gray snow, it was bitter cold and just plain gloomy. I figured that the price of the chid was better than a bouquet of flowers and the pretty face of that yellow phal. was just the thing I needed to brighten my day. I brought it home and enjoyed the blooms for months. As the blooms fell, one by one, I figured that I had gotten my money's worth and placed my bloomless plant next to my original NOID. Boy, was I shocked when it rebloomed, not once but twice that year. That did it for me.
My collection has grown slowly and now includes a couple of catts. and a phap. and a mess of phals. that seem to keep finding their way into my home. I think they're coming in with the mice.

I think what got me hooked was buying a dinky intrageneric hybrid at Safeway about three years ago. It has since bloomed five times and has had up to 45 flowers on a spike! Now I have 50+ orchids , many I have found on the markdown rack with no tag . I love surprises.

What, exactly, is the definition of "out of control"? If you mean there is no more room, then get more room. If you mean the card is maxed out, then get a new card. Get it? There is no "out of control"!

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

I was only growing catus and some succulents, long ago when I was searching for cactus books I came occross with
an orchid book titled "orchids on your window sill" written by Jack Kramer the way it was presented and the difficulties in
obtaining the orchids in our region of my country and the
pleasure involved in searching for these oxotic plants made me to grow orchids.
