my story;
well about 2-3 years ago, i was in a hardware store with my parents and saw a bonsai, and i really liked them. i went home and told my parents how much i did, but my mother then told me about the costs and difficulties that come with growing them.But of course, me been young, lol, i didnt trust them, so i went on the net, and, of course, mum was right, lol. My mum, said what about orchids? So i went on the net and looked them up, and i was hooked. for the next 4-6 mounths i was researching them and nagging my mum to buy me an orchid, with no luck. i then told my uncle who helps a lady with her orchids, he put in a sweet word for me, lol, and she gave me 6 of her plants. There has been no turning back, in my stupidity i have bought plants that arnt healthy, and have killed my fair share, in lack experience, but it think im getting the hang of it now. lol, sorry for the biography on my life, lol

looking variety that is available in the orchid kingdom. There are still some that I cannot grow, but they sure are fun to smell and look at. I love Miltonias, Zygopetalums, Draculas, Masdevalias but cannot grow them until I get set up for it. But I do grow bulbos, Pleurothallids, Mediocalcars, Lockhartias and a few other different ones in addition to growing some of the standards-Catts, Phals, Paphs, Oncidiums, Miltassias, Brassias. My addiction developed about a year ago.
I had a decent very enjoyable job, working with great people until the day we’ve got a new manager. Perhaps week or two later. She was 5 years younger then me and one day she decided to make me her best friend. She was nice enough but not my cup of tea and besides we had nothing in common so the `click` didn’t happen, at least not from my side. I politely refused all the presents, invitations for shopping trips,…. – I got first reminder who will be doing my pay review and after that my office life turned into hell

As I started part time university that year (3 evenings a week) time wise I couldn’t afford to change my job nor go for pick me up drinks after work and had to politely refuse every shoulder to cry on offered by my colleagues. One day it got really bad at work and I had to leave earlier. I don’t know how or why, all of a sudden I am in a flower shop paying for this gorgeous Vuylstekeara `Plush` - as a treat to my broken soul, to keep me sane. And every time when she `peed` me off I bought myself an orchid. Five month down the line I had 37 orchids, so go figure. Five month down the line, she'd got a nick ` stupid dog` across whole building and I got an addiction

I got hooked on plants in general when I visited a family friend's house and they had a huge clump of venus flytrap growing on the windowsill. I was 8 and hooked! I got a book on carnivorous plants and was shocked that venus flytraps grow where I live and nowhere else in the world! What a coincidence. That led to houseplants. houseplant books always have sections on orchids, but their verbage makes it seem that only those with conservatories can grow them. Well, after getting tired of shade after shade of green, I stumbled accross an out of bloom dendro for sale for $2 on Lowes last chance rack. The tag said burana jade. I had no idea what the flower looked like, but knew that $2 was an easy bet. A year after purchase it bloomed...green flowers. I was so disappointed at the color, but proud of my accomplishment. Next was brassavola nodosa and Sharry Baby. They bloomed within months. If you are not hooked by the orchid bug after smelling either of these two, then you are creeeeeepy! BTW, I still have that ugly ole dendro as well as 36 other chids.

I was realy proud of my spider plants and golden pothos w/ both of them looking wonderfull and thinking to myself how good i am at growing...then stoped and relized that anybody w/ water can grow spider plants or pothos...so i deeded somthing to chalangeing/demanding....found it i boudht one orchid from a green house and they threw in the root rot for free!!! after some majof surgery its doing great and so are the two other phals and kiki that were givin to me to try and revive...all are doing wonderfull hopefully we'll have blooms next year..

Hey thisis my first...1.30 mins on orchidboard. I got hooked through ebay also. I am nurturing some and still killing others BUT I AM PASSIONATE about orchids. I am designing an orchid shade house right now and have been researching getting my hands on some flasks and growing from babies. I just cant get enough from the moment Im awake in the morning till I go to sleep at night.....My darling husband is about to divorce me!.
I would like to hear from anyone who has had success ....and not had success with deflasking.

An addendum to my earlier post (don't go back, I'll summarize the important point):

I got my first orchid at "the public greenhouses in Piedmont Park", which is now the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I have not been back there in some 30 years, but I'm giving a semi-hydro talk there in March! I can't wait to go back "to mt roots" so to speak.
