Growing Orchid Seedlings?

Hey everyone,

I'd love for my next project to be learning how to grow orchids from seed, but I honestly don't have a clue where to start! Any suggestions on how to start, where to get the material, etc.? Any good youtube videos even?

I know how to pollinate orchids, btw, so that shouldn't be an issue!

And there is also a a bunch of threads written by bazinga that takes you through the different steps from pollination to sowing the seeds that are useful as a starting point.

Check through these threads and the comments on them.

I'd also actually love for my next project to be growing orchids from seeds and I'm busy trying to gather all the things I need to get started. I suspect I'll end up on some kind of 'potential terrorist' list when I'm done with my chemicals, medical equipment and all other odds and ends shopping.

What the others have said about checking out the Propagation forum on the OB is true, however...

I'm going to be reasonable here and advise you on something that is rather counter-intuitive.

Instead of learning how to sow orchids from seed and then learning how to grow orchid seedlings. I'd advise you to learn how to grow orchid seedlings properly before you learn how to sow orchid seeds.

Sowing orchids from seed is too separate a skill set than learning how to grow orchid seedlings properly. When you're learning how to grow orchid seedlings up to maturity, it will have a closer set of skills that you've already learned while learning how to grow mature orchids.

In regards to sowing orchid seeds, for now, just find a reliable and reputable orchid seed sowing lab to sow your orchid seeds for you.

When you've mastered how to grow seedlings up to maturity and how to harden them off properly, then would I advise you to move on to learning how to sow orchid seeds. And when you learn to sow orchids from seed, be prepared to really be involved, because it can be very difficult to grasp for those who don't have a background in science, (although, at times, it doesn't always have to be).

That's my best advice on this subject matter. My .
