I have a cymbidium insigne. This odd looking growth has been here for a while and recently just grew pointier. What is this? When it had new bulbs, they looked different. I posted a before and after picture for your comparison. Thanks!

OMG!! Really?!? I'm so excited! This is my 2nd orchid in my collection. I've had it for about 2 years and have never seen it bloom! How can I get the spike to grow faster since it was stuck in the smaller stage for 6 months? Will fertilizer help?

Oooooh YES! Fertilizer will definitely help! Begin to use a good orchid fertilizer with the higher middle number. (Phosphorus) This encourages blooming! I LOVE Cymbidiums! They are my FAVORITE all time orchid but I can't grow them here in Florida because the temps don't drop enough during the winter and it's too hot. Sigh....

Good luck with yours! Please post pics along the way!

Thanks for the tip! I'm in NJ and the recent temperature fluctuations and dismal weather have initiated buds and spikes in most of my orchids. I will definitely post pictures when they bloom!

Gently squeeze the new growth. Spikes will generally feel hollow.

Most likely a new pbulb growing as this is the time of year new growth comes along. Secretly I hope it is a bloom spike but..... Cymbidiums are two year growers. They grow a new pbulb which matures the first season and then store energy during the early part of the second season and when it gets colder they flower. So feed this new growth well this season and you'll have a nice bunch of flowers next season. You should get more new growth out of this too.

You have a new growth starting and you should definitely be fertilizing. Cyms actually want to be fed all year long, just a more dilute concentration during the winter months.
