phal re potting? Male
Default phal re potting?

Hi everyone. . . Phals have always been my favorite flower and i have just gotten my first one a couple of days ago. And after doing some research and finding this amazingly informative site. . . I noticed that some of the root on the plant look a little off color and feel kinda brittle and i was wondering how i should go about repotting or if i should at all. I have a clay pot and some miracle gro orchid potting mix. Any advice would be great

I'd probably repot. I really, really dislike the Miracle Gro Orchid Potting Mix. In my area it is like soil with a few pieces of bark mixed in. It depends on the area you're in, it seems. I like to use sphagnum or a mostly sphagnum mix for my phals, especially if I put them in clay pots. I also add a little horticultural charcoal to keep the mix fresh and sweet.

Just to clarify on the re potting. You would remove plant.trim dead or rotting roots.clean off old medium.put a little in pot.hold plant and place more medium.would you cover roots that are already above ground? And do you water after potting is done?if so how much?

You could cover roots above ground, just don't plant it too deep. I almost always water after repotting. I water so water comes pouring out the bottom.

Just a side note, I see your orchid is in bloom. There is just a slight risk that it may drop buds and blooms when you repot. Many have been successful repotting blooming orchids.

Would it be best to wait until the rest bloom and drop?

I usually don't repot something that's in bloom unless it is a real emergency or if it never stops blooming. So look at the roots and the media and decide if it looks good or not.

I think it would need to be soon but i will probably wait and keep an eye on it. I Dont want to shock it to much.
And thank you all for the help and comments
