Oh wow, thanks so much! I was trying to figure out what the mix was! At first I thought the white things were some form of packaging, but because there was so much I figured it must be apart of the mix. I'm probably going to repot it though because the mix looks as though it does not get much air circulation! Are you thinking of getting an orchid from there!? =D

Not right away, but yes! I like several of the Phals, the prices are good, and the company rates well at Dave's Garden Watchdog. I've bookmarked their catalog, and I'm glad you posted about them. :-)

Usually when you order orchids online, they are not going to have spikes or blooms unless specifically stated in the text description, so it's normal that this plant doesn't have any. Also, you'll usually pay a lot more for plants in that growth stage. Overall this orchid looks fine though! Personally, I would not leave it in a peat mix; some orchids do ok in that but not phals! I'd move it to loosely packed sphagnum moss or a bark-type mix, if you can find some.

I bought several orchids from Carter and Holmes last month, through their mail order catalog. They were having a special on their young plants. I bought the same one you're referring to. C&H has excellent potting medium, their own "recipe". The medium is not old and will likely last until next spring.
I don't know where you live but if you are ever in South Carolina, it's worth the trip to tour their 18 greenhouses in Newberry. I never hesitate to call them if I have a concern about one of their orchids.
I bought 8 in November while visiting and 8 more last month. One phal bit the dust after the holidays because I overwatered. When in doubt, don't water.
Good luck, it's a beautiful orchid.
