Got orchids?
Default Got orchids?

My neighbor have me a couple huge orchid flowers that they were growing outside and I fell in love!!! They are just gorgeous! I had no idea that they could grow outside and am amazed and am dying to get my own. I've bought indoor ones for people but have never had any myself. i'd love to get the outdoor variety. I wanted to find out if anyone knew where to get them in Los Angeles california area for an inexpensive price? Would love to get some and have them spruce up my garden.

to the OB! Everything here is covered in snow , so I'm of no help. Others will chime in though and share their knowledge.

I would take a guess at these being cymbidium.
The best way to get them inexpensively is to join your local orchid society - the added bonus will be to make new like-minded friends as well as find out more about the orchids that you can grow outdoors in your area.

Pac8Orchids (Welcome to Pac 8 Orchids!).

Got mainly hybrids. Rarely they'll throw in a species to their availability. Great people. They're in Culver City on Overland. I get some of my supplies from them too.

If you're gonna deal with Norman's Orchids, deal with his brother Eric, not Norman. Norman's too high strung. Repot his stuff right away.

I agree they are likely to be Cymbidiums, tho there are other orchids that can be grown outside year-round in So-Cal ( tho need protection from frost, freeze, or even cold winter rain)

There are quite a few that can be grown outdoors year round here in SoCal. Some of these are orchids you may not have heard of before if you're a beginner because they are not generally sold en masse to the general public. These lesser known orchids are generally lumped under the term "botanicals".

Vanda (Neofinetia) falcata is one that grows very easily here.

Many of the larger epiphytical Laelia species also grow outdoors here without problems. One of them is Laelia anceps.

If you like Dendrobiums, Dendrobium kingianum is a good one to grow outdoors.

I had heard of Pac8Orchids in Los Angeles before but I didn't realize that they were in Culver City. Thanks for the tip; I'll have to check the place out next time I am in the area. Occasionally I go out to lil place called Orchid Fever ( Orchid Fever L.A ), which is about a mile away from Pac8Orchids, with my mom because, along with orchids and flower arrangement, they have a nice selection of houseplants healthier and for cheaper than BBS (the place is fueling her current begonia obsession lol).
