Orchids collected from jungle when it was Legal Male
Default Orchids collected from jungle when it was Legal

Hi my name is Hector, I recently started collecting orchids. The other day I met a gentleman who owned an orchid store and had over 3000 orchids at one point.. He is going out of the country for a year and has no one to take care of his collection so he decided to see them... he sold many orchids for 10 dollars or less. ... there are 2 of them that came from the jungles of Peru, and Mexico( He collected them himself when it was legal back in the 70's)

However I can't find very much info on one...

the tag says something like.. Rodrigezia batemani "Speciosa" this was from the jungles of Peru... it ahs a number 587

He also sold me another collected one called Enc. Alatum Majus from Nicaragua.,

and another from the jungles of Australia which is a Dendrobium Kingianum

I was also given many other ones like an And. Africana

an Paph. that won an award form the AOS.

and a bunch of miniature ones. for 100 dollars...

He gave me a Free Hydrofogger humidifier, and a Flasking hood, and all the Flasking supplies for free...

Any Help will do with set ups for raising these orchis.. or even Identifying the one from Peru the "speciosa"..

Like I said, I'm new so give me a break.. ahha

I have a lot of experience with other plants but not much with orchids

only the SLC Wendy Redstone orchid is on bloom all the rest are not. but getting ready.

And. Africana maybe is Ansellia africana? Take a look on the web to compare plants

The first plant is Rodriguezia batemanii, a small epiphytic species from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. Your tag with 'Speciosa' in quotes usually means a clonal name but there is a var. speciosa listed - see for picture and info:

I think the second plant is Encyclia alata, a species found from Mexico through Costa Rica. There is a Synonyms name - Epidendrum alatum var. majus Hort. ex Sanders 1927. -- see for picture and info:

I agree with esculida - you lucked into it. Great to hear of your good fortune - and a lot of plants to play with to boot - Great deal.

I just love that you said we have jungles in Australia

kiangianums are easy as pie to grow, they'll pretty much grow in anything(or on anything if you want to mount it) and as long as they get a bit of water every now and then they grow like wildfire. In the bush here they usually grow in cracks in granite boulders, at the base of trees, etc
