Superthrive is great! Just water your plant with it...it's kinda pointless to put it in a bowl under the pot (or in a humidity tray). You want it to run freely thru the medium and over the roots in the process.
Take your watering pot and water the medium...do not water from above the leaves. Cuz then you have to wipe off the leaves and crown so the water doesn't sit and fester (possibly creating rot problems). When you water, you want the water to make the medium damp, BUT it has to be able to flow thru the holes in the pot.
RULE OF THUMB---an orchid is NOT a waterlily.

my concern w/ watering is it all just flowing out the bottom before the medium has a chance to absorb and retain any of the good ju-ju so what I was thinking is basically submerging (just up to the top of medium) the plant for a couple mins to let the medium absorb the water and Super thrive and then draining properly....if im still stuck in the wrong please feel free to curse my name and kick me....

Sorry to be a bit of a wet blanket, but...
When using bark (especially that coarse stuff), it's always a good idea to pour boiling water over it before use, as that opens up the structure and allows it to absorb more in the future. As you've already potted up the plant - and we don't want to traumatize it further - try this: - Adjust your faucet to a full flow of tepid water.
- Set the plant under it and let it run through the medium for several minutes. (Water the medium, not the top of the plant.)
- Wait 30 minutes.
- THEN water with your SuperThrive solution.
A couple of additional comments: - Don't let the medium dry out completely, or you'll likely have to do that again. Phals prefer a constant moisture supply anyway, and with fresh, coarse bark, you're probably not in danger of suffocating and rotting the roots for at least 6 months to a year.
- Your first SuperThrive application can be as much as a teaspoon per gallon, but don't do more than a drop or two after that, or it can lead to deformed flowers (I have observed that myself) or stunted growth (I was told that one),

Yes that was one step that I noticed I missed was the thorough soaking of the chips before potting. I will proceed w/ the water as described today and then the dose of superthrive and let you guys know how it comes out.

Welcome to Orchid Board!!!!!
Sounds like you are right on track.
Think about joining your local orchid society or the American Orchid Society (AOS). I am a member of the AOS and the Houston Orchid Society. You will learn alot from the meetings. In Houston we have a newcomers group where you are a new member for the first two years and you guys have a special meeting to attend that just concerns newcomers.

Canfield - you and I went through pretty much the same experience. I bought a phal (first and only orchid), repotted into bark that had not been soaked. So after discussion on the boards I soaked pot, orchid and all overnight and cut off any dead roots visible without having to repot.
I'm just being patient, but the orchid actually looks OK all things considered. I also have 4 buds starting. It's so nice to have someone learning along with me.

Welcome to the OB!! I gotta say that was well done with what you did with that Phal. I am still fairly new to Orchids myself and have questions from every now and then...believe me when most of us have said that these folks know what they are talking about. These were great Q&A and yes laughed a couple of times as well.
