I know its late in the year, I'm in North Alabama. Do you think I should re pot this Phal Orchid? How would you go about doing it? Bury the roots?

Do you think I should re pot this Sherry Baby? It has not bloomed yet but is putting out roots. Should I split it? o6.jpg

Hi,
about the Phal: even if you repot it, there's no way to put those aerial roots into the pot without breaking them.
When did you last check the roots in the pot or repotted? It seems to me that the roots are avoiding the mix, so maybe they don't like it?

About the oncidium: if it needs repotting, now that it's putting out roots is a good time. I can see only 3-4 pseudobulbs, so I wouldn't divide it yet. Also the pot looks a bit big for the size of the plant, but this is just my opinion.

Agree with Violette, especially about the pot size. It looks to me that the two are over-potted. Orchids like to be pot bound with lots of air for the roots. So choose the smallest possible pot in which the orchid roots will fit.

I totally agree with what's been said already. Both look over-potted. The oncidium likely needs 3 to 4 mature pseudobulbs to bloom, so by no means would you want to divide it.

I can't tell from the photos, but do these pots have good drainage? Both plants would need that and I wonder if that is why the Phal is growing so many aerial roots. also the oncidium looks to have fairly shriveled Pseudobulbs. some just do that, but if there is no drainage it is a cause for concern.

Yes on the pot size, I bought the Sharry Baby in May as a dry root one and the Phal is about 2 years old I re potted this year, I probley have several I put in too big pots. I bought a load of clear plastic square orchid pots some months ago. Do you think its ok to pot them now this the time of year? Isnt this the time of the year the Sherry Baby wants to spike?

I like clear pots and Phals seem to like them as their roots do photosynthesize. I like that you can see the roots and if they are green in the pot, they are still moist and don't need water. If they are silver, they are dry. Unless Phals are in full spike they can be potted any time. I even re-pot in full spike if I fear for the root system. Choose a pot that just fits the root ball and give it a nice open airy mix. Pre-soak new bark as it doesn't hold water very well at first. If you recently re-potted, you can re-use the bark. same for the Oncid, pre-soak bark and choose a fairly small pot.

The best time to re-pot Oncidiums is when they have a new growth that is putting out new roots. However, if the roots are in jeopardy as an over-potted plant might be, I would re-pot. The clear pots are great for them too. They grow spikes on a recently matured growth so you may have to wait till a new growth forms to get blooms.

Both plants should be watered well and then well drained. Let the Phal get dry all the way thru or very close to dry before watering again. Most Oncids should get nearly dry but not bone dry in between watering. Good luck!
