Is this a root or a spike on my Phal? Male
Default Is this a root or a spike on my Phal?

Hello,

Just wanted to ask what is this? Root or spike. Originally I though it was a spike since it is growing sort of upwards but not entirely sure.

Thanks in advance for your help

Root..a nice healthy one. Spikes on phals looks like a mitten on the end. Sort of like a thumb seperate from the fingers if you can picture it. Your plant looks well loved though. I bet you get a spike in no time.

Thanks Steph! Yes I've being caring (and loving) this orchid since I got it a year ago. I hope you're right, since a nice spike would be the ultimate gift. Keep fingers crossed

Yes, a root. Giving them some cooler temps for a few weeks and good light in the fall often gets them spiking.

Thanks Silken! Yes that's what I'm currently doing with this plant. It is outdoors getting some pretty chilly evening temps with bright light (some sun) during the day. I'm also fertilizing with a bloom booster in the hopes that it helps. We'll see

It's a healthy looking plant so there is a good chance it will bloom for you!
