Thwaitesara (DC0119) X 3times I dont know what it looks like.
Default Thwaitesara (DC0119) X 3times I dont know what it looks like.

I bought this orchid from a nursery while hubby was checking out all the flowering ones. Due to the factor that I like surprizes, I bought this one.

The Code: DC0119
Heading: Thwaitesara
Info below: ((Rhynchosophrocattleya (Mem Helen Brown x Sunset Bay) X Sophronitis Starry Sky)
Dated: 27 Feb 08
Brother: 2/11/06

All this was a little Greek to me until I started Googling. This is definitly a Cattleya group, but I cannot find any photo of this combination.

Please can someone help me find a picture or photo of this orchid, and what does the Brother date below mean.

Thanks a ton

OK I don't think it has a registered name I'm afraid which makes it harder to search for pictures, looking for pictures of it's parents may give you some guess as to what it should look like.

Its a genus of Thwaitesara and it's parents are...
Rhynchosophrocattleya Mem Helen Brown
Rhynchosophrocattleya Sunset Bay
Sophronitis Starry Sky

First the two Rhynchosophrocattleya were crossed with each other and then the Sophronitis Starry Sky was crossed with the result. That's shown by the x between parts of the name and the brackets.

Rhynchosophrocattleya (Mem Helen Brown x Sunset Bay) shows those two were crossed with each other. Rhynchosophrocattleya could be in front of both names, but because they are both in that genus it's shortened by moving it outside the brackets. Then the Sophonitis follows that after an x, showing it was crossed with what proceeds it.

I've searched the RHS register and as far as I can tell the Mem Helen Brown x Sunset Bay cross has not been given a name of it's own, that being the case, the whole cross including the Sophonitis can't have been given it's own name either. That's why such a long name is listed giving the parents. If the cross of those parents ever is registered you will be able to apply the name to your plant.

I'm afraid I don't know what the brother bit means at all

Thwaitesara does not appear to be registered with the RHS as a grex name: it could be pending I guess.

If it's a new cross there may not be any pictures on the web. Your best bet is to look up the parents and see what they look like. Then be the first to post when yours flowers *G*

Off to have a quick look for flowers of a seed-grown Brassia hybrid I have... none so far! Had it several months...

No idea on the brother date. The code is probably just for convenience in the nursery.

Sorry to go off at a tangent in your thread, but it shows you might have to wait a few months to see pics... but I've just found the first pic I've seen of one of my plant's sibs in flower (seed grown, like yours may well be, so won't be identical)

The plant down the bottom of the page not the Rex

Will be very happy if mine turns out similar to that... hope yours works out well too! (Now we just have to get them to flower, LOL)

Rosie's explanation pretty well sums it up. I just installed the latest update in OrchidWiz and they don't have a registered name or pics. The first two listed in your cross which would make up one of the parents are somewhat similar to each other being rather full yellowish Cattleya's with some soft pink shades. The 2nd parent which is Soph. Starry Sky is a star shaped medium to deep pink type bloom based on the look of both of it's parents. No photo for it tho. So that throws in an interesting combination. You'll have to bloom it and let us all see what resulted from this interesting cross!

Thwaitesara was a hybrid genus in the Cattleya alliance, but is no longer in use. At the time it combined Cattleya x Guarianthe x Rhyncholaelia x Sophronitis. It should never have been applied to this hybrid since there are no Guarianthe species involved. And all plants once called Sophronitis are now considered Cattleya for registration purposes, and take away the Guarianthe, so the correct name now is Rhyncholaeliocattleya.

Another complication... There are 2 hybrids named Rlc. Sunset Bay, both registered in 1968, one by Fields and the other by Miyamoto. There is also Lc. Sunset Bay, registered in 1967. There is no way to be sure from your tag which of these was used here. None have a registered hybrid with Mem Helen Brown. Good luck ever figuring out, though maybe the vendor can clear up which Sunset Bay it was.

Just guessing here, but the Brother date could be the originator of the cross and when it was made. Brother Orchid Nursery is more commonly associated with Phals though. The other date perhaps when your vendor bought a flask or compot and/or potted them or printed tags.
