I just got my first Catasetum from Fred Clarke on Thursday. I went to the San Diego area for vacation and visited Sunset Valley Orchids and Andy's Orchids. It was great! What was really interesting is that the two growers grow their orchids completely different. Andy grows his more natural and outside under shade cloth. He does have greenhouses too but Fred's are newer and his plants are all in greenhouses. I spent 4.5 hours talking to Andy. They were both really nice guys.
Fred asked me if I have ever grown a Catasetum and I told him no so he gave me one to try. I got 18 new orchids on my vacation. They both threw in some freebies too!
I just wish I remembered to take pics! I can't believe I didn't! Fred had a lot of beautiful Cattleya species in full bloom in his personal collection. I so so wish I took pics of them since that was the first time I had seen some of the species in bloom in real life.
Show us the blooms! I don't know what cross I got but I will let you know when I get mine in the mail next week. I couldn't carry all those plants on the plane so I had all but three shipped. Mine did look just like yours. Maybe we got the same cross. That would be fun to compare blooms! Congrats on the spike!
