Old thread Discus...

Silje, what did you end up getting and how are they doing? (I killed all my milts by the way! LOL. I have a Nelly Isler now: growing well but I seem to be managing to keep it dark enough not to reflower)

Hmmm...lets see. I've got quite a few orchids since then and the collection has increased in all directions, but for that first order I got myself the following plants:

Beallara Peggy Ruth Carpenter
Beallara Tahoma Glacier
Dendrobium Earsakul
Dendrobium jenkinsii
Miltoniopsis Messenger
Miltoniopsis Roelie van Rooyen
Laeliocattleya Gold Digger

And how are they doing.

Well, I threw out some brown dead stuff that was the leftovers of the miltoniopsis only a few weeks ago. They had been suffering for a long time before I declared them dead. Don't think I'll go for miltoniopsis again anytime soon, although I think they are stunning and would love to be able to grow them.

The Beallara Peggy Ruth Carpenter has been flowering once and are currently making a new spike again. The Tahoma Glacier on the other hand, is sulking. Not sure why, they stand side by side and get the same treatment.

The Dendrobium jenkinsii has been flowering (i got two and they have a very special place in my heart - I love egg yolk yellow callista dendrobiums).

The earsakul is growing, but did not flower yet. It's mounted on a quite large mount (bad decision from my side) and I think I'll move it back into a pot.

The Golddigger is also growing and has made four new bulbs, but no sheaths so far. It got a bit of a dip with some root rot because of overwatering, but it's a survivor and it's recovering well.

My mantra whenever I go close to my catts nowadays is to not water, just look and maybe mist.

With my mounted plants, if they regularly look a little dessicated, I've found adding a little sphagnum moss around the roots really helps (keeps them damper for longer).
Someone at my OS once helpfully suggested I should just not go to work and mist the plants all day instead, but that's just what retired people think. They were joking of course. But only partly...
