Orchid leaves having a purple hue and leaves going limp
Smile Orchid leaves having a purple hue and leaves going limp

Hi, I have two orchids I think they are both phalaenopsis ones. One I have had for 3/4 years and I've had 2 flower stems each year, however after it has flowered the stem and leaves have died down completely so even though I have had it for this long it only has 2 and a half leaves ( I cut one half from one as it had a black spot on it, no more appeared after that?) and its leaves have a purple hue to it? Is this from too much sun? I assume its okay as its currently flowering now, again with 2 stems?

I recently bought another one from a garden centre and it is doing well, but the leaves on this one have gone soft/limp and turned a different colour where the sun is on it?

Shall I move them both somewhere else and can I do anything about the limp leaves? I water once a week and mist once a week too?

Thanks

I recommend reading the sticky "The Phal abuse ends here" from the very beginning.

Welcome to Orchid Board

Purple hue relates mostly to sunlight, but I have noticed that plants that are limp tend to turn purple in the sun easier than those which are healthy. Some can take going quite purple and still be healthy, it all depends on the ancestry of the plant. Those with dark colour flowers tend to be more purple than those with lighter flowers.

If it is going limp that is more of a concern. You say it has gone a different colour in the sun... what colour has it gone. If it's gone pale and yellow/brown then it could be actually burnt and you need to reduce the light levels you are giving it (some phals can cope with more light than others).

Limpness tends to indicate a root problem unless the sun has completely burnt that leaf. It's best to take a look at the roots if there is a possibility of a root problem. Post photos here so we can try and advise on the roots.

Oh, and like Philip I do advise reading that link he gave you all the way through as it has some really good information about Phals and how to avoid killing them.

Your conditions are too low in humidity in comparison to the temperature and light given . Try increasing humidity for the Phals. These orchids are sensitive to moisture

Interesting, in the UK I've never found I've had to increase humidity for Phals if the roots are in good condition, some of my other orchids yes, but not Phals.

Especially with the weather we are getting just now which is raining most of the time

Feel the leaves. If they are warm to the touch, then it's too much light. If they aren't warm, then it's something else.
