Why upgrade? I don't know the answer, but I have never chosen to upgrade. I'm not sure what I would upgrade to.

My thoughts are that as long as it works, I'm fine.

Thanks for all the advice you two! I am going to give it a try. I am hoping to have it installed before I leave for vacation...that way when I come back...hopefully I can get my watering out of the way to visit with family that will be in town....I hate to have to tell everyone that I will take 3 hours to water my orchids before I can spend time with them...they just wouldn't understand...lol.

Oh...one other thought. There is one other company in my area...they only sell and install the unit...but didn't say what brand it was.....it is 799.00 and is a five stage system and a 3.5 gallon tank and will draw up to 50 gallons a day! I guess I could throw it on the credit card...but I really hate to do that because then I am paying interest on it...not that it would really be that much...

I don't see the point, unless you need that capacity! By the way, 5- stage has to do with filters. Culligen has 4 filters plus the membrane for 5 stage.

Regarding RO systems? Here is my 2 cents worth...I decided to rent from Culligan because they do the filter changes and so on. I had to agree to rent for 2 years before I could cancel. I have had it for about 3 days and I really like it! I sometimes get yucci smells from my water and now because they told me that if I use the system more, it works better so now I water the chids, drink more water and my tea (which I love about the same as the plants) tastes better! I will change to a zero waste system when my required time is finished but I really like the RO and should have done it years ago.

I did a searching for the spec. from the system that I installed. I gave some wrong #'s. The system makes 10 gallons a day. The base cost is 159.00 for the complete system. extra filters are prefilter and filter set are 38.00 and the membrane is 40.00 which needs to be replaced twice a year. So for the first year your cost will be without tax 237.00 and 160.00 a year after that. And you own the system. They claim to remove 99% of all contaminates. Hope this helps. The system is s GE smartwater RO system available at Home Depot.

I just purchased a Watt's Zero-Waste system that produces 24 gallons/day. Considered rental but wanted a system that does not send 75%+ of the water used during filtering down the drain.

My plan is to feed the RO water into a 200 gal storage tank with a float shut-off.

That is interesting I have never heard of a zero.waste system (great Idea). We used those float switches in the automated car washes. Let us know how it works for you.

Yup, go ahead and buy one if that's an option. It's a lot cheaper than renting. I also have roughly thirty plants, and I bought an RO unit and had it installed in the kitchen under the sink. So now there's a water tap over the sink that dispenses nothing but RO water. I have three ten-gallon buckets in the garage that are filled with RO water. Since I usually go through a bucket each morning when I water the plants, it's not difficult to keep the three in the garage filled at all times. I change the filter twice a year, which is a relatively hassle-free fifteen to thirty minute job. I think the initial set-up for the unit and its installation was somewhere in the neighborhood of $200. Filters are maybe around thirty bucks for my unit. I think it's probably one of the best investments I've made since I started this hobby.
