Paphiopedilum Bud Question

Hey all!

I recently bought a new Paph that was in bloom. One flower was just about fully open while there was another bud on the same spike that was plump but not cracking yet. After a few days the smaller bud began to open and has been opening more and more everyday. I just didn't know if I should clip the opening bud up like the other bloom or wait to see if the bud will get upright as it opens more. What does everyone think the best idea would be? (Pics below)

I recommend using florist wire instead. If you clip it, it may snap because of how thin the inflorescence is for the second bloom.

Thanks for the quick response. Should I wait till the bloom is fully open to hold it up or do it now before the bud is fully open?

I would just tie it(or clip) on the main stalk. There is really no need to support each bloom.

I have heard if you clip onto the ovary (the swollen part on the stem right below the bud) before the flower is fully open, it possibly won't open. So at least wait till it opens and as billc said, likely no need to support individual buds.

I have found that if you simply turn the clip around so the fingers are grasping the stake instead of the spike the clip won't damage the spike. The area just behind the spring is wider and provides a little notch the spike can nest in without being squished.

Personally I would just move your clip up. That spike is pretty thin and the weight of the flower may be too much for it to hold up by itself.
