FDK After Dark Question Male
Default FDK After Dark Question

My Mom got me an early christmas present! The FDK after dark black orchid! WOOO! And even better it has two spikes which have 10 and 12 buds on them

Should I keep watering for the spikes even though the plant is going dormant? One bulbs set of leaves is already gone and the 2nd are going yellow and about to fall off. So far ive just been misting the top of the soil every other day. Is it safe to water the plant or can the flowers bloom without water during dormancy?

Thanks
Ben

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Looks like you probably don't need to water it at all.

I would water them.

You do not want them to go so dormant that they discard the buds. The leaves are falling off but the flowers still need water to develop.

Ok that's kinda what I think too. At least until a bud or two opens because they still need to develop and that takes away from the bulbs storage for it's dormancy right? That's why it needs the water? Or do they store enough where it can flower and be dormant still without water?

When they are blooming it is not considered a dormant stage. Yes, keep watering them. Clowesia and some of their crosses don't bloom at all until their leaves drop.
