Default I got my first orchid !

I was at home depot and they had 50% off their orchids not in bloom anymore lol.

I got mine for 3 bucks. It is dendrobium zeschina Lynn. I will see if I can keep it alive. I have some wood I collected and will like to mount it on the wood.

I will post pictures later. Its pretty healthy plant. It looked like it had two spikes when it bloomed.

Kali - I'm a little confused about the name of your Dendrobium. There is no Den Zeschina Lynn and you said that your plant had two old spikes from it's previous blooming. I'm assuming that there were no flowers on it when you bought it, what I would like to know is how did you come up with the name Den bigibbum?

I apologize for the misspelling it is zeschia
typing on a tablet is not easy.

congrats on your orchid! and welcome to the forum

im pretty sure dendrobium zeschia lynn is a hybrid, its of the phalaenopsis type, and has dendrobium biggibum in the parentage, as most den phals do.

im also pretty positive its not a species, because the chance of having a species at home depot is very low.

Hi Help you are right on the back of the tag it says Zeschia lynn dendrobium X

I been reading about dendrobiums for a while. I plan to get a lot of them for my terrarium. I wanted to know should I give this one a winters rest ? I was reading some info about bigibbum ( maybe this one is mixed with it the pictures look similar to the tag) I was on orchidsonline and it stated that during winters rest no water for 4-5 months.

I am about to put it under my t5's and see how it does. In home depot it was inside so far away from the lights and in the house plant section.

I would like to mount it but I have not seen a similar hyrbid mounted. Everyone has them in pots. I am worried it wont look as nice mounted.

Yes, it's quite likely yours could be a bigibbum hybrid.

I have a mounted Den bigibbum v compactum (small variety) - does great that way. No true rest, tho in my winter conditions - cool temps, damper weather, I do ease up on the watering in winter.

Pix attached, so you can see how it looks mounted - I love it! - first one is from early this year, in bloom; second is from a couple of months ago

WOW Whiterabbit thanks for the picture ! I do like the look of it mounted

Mine came in a 2 inch pot so I am not sure if its wise to mount it now or now ? I am so scared to over water it so I been eyeing it for a few days. The media its in is dry, but the leaves are firm and upright. I failed last night to collect rain water It was raining but in so cal it was a light drizzle ... So nothing was really collected in my container. I think it should rain today.

I do have a ro/di unit I used to use on my aquarium then I used the water for my Hibiscus. I will start collecting this water again in my 5 gallon jug and use it on all my plants.

My other question is this. I collected perfect mounting wood in our local forests. I want to know how do a cure it ?

I have 3 pieces of wood
