How to provide the change of temperature for night without drafts?
Default How to provide the change of temperature for night without drafts?

Hello,
I have learned that some orchids prefer fresh air, good air circulation and a little changes of temperature. I own an Odontoglossum orchid and I believe they'd like the temperature of 65-80F daytime and 50-65F night time, correct?

But, I've also read that orchids do not enjoy "cold drafts". That makes me wonder what is a "cold draft" and how can I avoid it? Do you think it'd cause a "cold draft" if I slightly opened my window for the night and moved the orchid closer to it? Are Odontoglossums sensitive to placement changes as well? It's been about 50-60F outside here lately.

To present any real problem a 'cold draft' would have to be more than a few degrees colder than the lowest recommended night temperature. To harm an Odontoglossum in a 50F environment the draft would probably have to be below freezing.

Moving a plant to a slightly different location indoors isn't enough of a change to cause a problem, and if it gives an appropriate temperature drop at night it should be beneficial.

Thank you very much for clearing this out for me.

I wish I had found this place sooner. I haven't gotten such clear and fast answers about orchid care from anywhere else. C:

^ Agreed! Lots of very friendly, attentive, and helpful people here. Plus, the forum software is really good. So many other sites are cumbersome to navigate and read.
