Default Is this normal flower development?

all I recently purchased this noid phal. I liked the colour and thought the flowrs would eventually open. Well I've had it about a month and 2 of it's buds opened and have stayed the same way. Is this some ort of stress and next year the flowers will be different or will it always bloom like this? Thanks for the replies

Thats strange, the flowers look healthy and unfaded. I can't think of any explanation but shock from envirnmental change. But the next bloom should be normal.

I don't know what causes that but I've had a couple of cattleyas do the same thing. Both of my catts should bloom again this fall and if they don't open properly again this year I plan to get rid of them. I don't even have a guess as to what causes it.

It looks 'peloric' to me. Some phals have this mutation which means their flowers stay this way. It's when the petals have a tendency to mimic the lip either in shape, colouring or position (sometimes all three).

It's possible it will be different on another flowering, but it's also possible it will be a 'stable' characteristic of this plant which will occur every time. Someone showed one recently that had one spike like this and another normal. That was an example of an unstable one. Sometimes it can just be a couple of flowers, other times all of them.

Some people really like peloric phals and I think there is one company who specialise in making them like this.

Yeah, I had one that was not peloric for 2 years and then all of a sudden it started flowering peloric and has done so for 2 years since. No explanation other than possible DNA.

Thankyou everyone for your responses. My son thinks it looks cool lol. All the flowers look exactly the same including ones that opened since i've had it. I noticed it is making another new one so we will see if it comes out the same. I've never seen a peloric before so would be cool to have one. I guess i'll find out next flowering if it truly is one. Thanks again )
