Question Hi am new and need help with beautiful orchid

My daughter sent me a Pacific Evening Star. Currently it is in a ceramic planter that has no holes in the bottom. I am afraid I will overwater it. Please give me some good advice. It is beautiful and I want to treat it correctly We live on the Oregon coast, so we have a mild temperature.
Thank you.
Hope all are enjoying this wonderful weekend. The price of gas has kept us home. We are now saving for the gas just to take a trip. Before it was pretty much about motel rooms; campsites; food; excursions...oh well - no one is going to listen to me

Hi Lucy,

Could you provide the full name of the orchid? It could be spelled out (like Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium) or abbreviated (like Phal. or Dend.)

We can probably provide you with specific care instructions if we get that info.

I hope you fall in love with orchids, and want to grow a hundred of them.

If it is in a ceramic pot that hasn't any drain holes, you probably should re-pot it into a more suitable pot. Overwatering is one of the ways you can kill an orchid. You might want to get a copy of Ortho's "All About Orchids" which is a great beginner's "how to book". Most of the big box stores have racks of the Ortho books and it is usually there and isn't very expenisve. Good luck.

the Ortho's "All About Orchids" is actually out of print now.. the replacement is Ortho's "Complete Guide to Growing Orchids".. they've added some genera and basically beefed up the book (and the cost). I bought as many of the "All About Orchids" as I could find in my area, since it's still one of my favorites and one I still recommend to my customers.
