That is what I hope will happen. I think it should go into the Beginner section because that is usually the first questions a person asks, the ID of there first orchid. I made this thread so that people can learn about NoIDs without feeling that the older members think they are "unlearned." I have seen in several separate posts where the new member is offended by the suggestion that their orchid is hopelessly nameless. This might prevent them from coming back to Orchid Board, and inhibiting the chance to learn a ton about orchids.

Now I'm not sure how accurate this is, but a fellow is member told me they can go in tue exhibit, and can be classed under "miscellaneous" (it was something like that) and still get a ribbon but not an AOS award, of course idk how true this really is...

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that noids can be submitted for cultural awards.

Agreed, a very good post and I've added the sticky. Currently I've left it in beginner, but also created a thread in the ID area that links to this one and stuck that, so it is effectively in both places.

I just want to add couple of points of my own.

First photos on the internet. If you post a photo here on OB, or else where on the internet using a name you are not 100% certain of then others may use that photo to try and ID their NoID. If yours is not certain their ID will be even more uncertain and they may then post that somewhere as being the name of theirs and ... the problem of mis-identification gets worse and worse.

Second, not all characteristics are visible in photos. Not long ago Mauro posted two pictures of two different plants that looked pretty similar. When asked the difference he said that the difference was only visible when seen first hand, not in photos. The difference was in the texture and substance of the petals/sepals and that was not picked up by any photos.

I've seen the the same thing with two of my NoIDs. They look pretty similar to each other in photos... there is a difference in shape slightly, but not enough that someone might not look at one of them and not think it was the other. However seeing them in person the colour quality is different and the difference just does not show through on any photos I can take. Additional the flower size is notably different in person but not noticeable in pictures.

It's important to remember why you can never 100% ID most NoID's unless you have some idea in the first place.

I give all of mine names, but they always have a marker showing they are NoID and whenever I post pictures I always make sure it is clear they are actually a NoID.

I checked with the person running our show and apparently I can put noids in the show, if it's noted as such, and they can get ribbons. I'll let you know after the show if I get any ribbons for them.

askin a grower/hybridizer about a 6 year old plant cross? ask dwayne if he could remember any "dottie mcdowell's" from one of his other 500 "dottie mcdowells" ?

I asked one here and he tell me "wont judge Noids bec the rules say "you have to have the plants lineage in order to be judged for an award by the AOS"..Your local OS could/would judge the plant for local posterity while the AOS would not recognize it bec of the Noid Status...

so yeah dont try to slip Noids in on the Judges with wrongly applied TAGS. That doesnt sound like orchid people anyway that would do that.
