Hi! So reading through all of the information here is overwhelming, but what a great resource. I had been checking RHS for orchid names but using "Find a Plant" and then I found the link here to search by genus and grex. When I do that- the two NoIDs that I got from Cosmic Plants that are called Phal Golden Beauty and Nassau seem to be actually named! Does it matter, I guess, that I got them as big box rescues rather than from a grower? I don't know how "pure" they are so to speak. I'm also excited because now I know the D. Arigang blue #3 is not a NoID, yay!

If they had tags on when you bought them & if the name on the tag is on the RHS register then in most cases you can take a the name as genuine.

It's not always the case, and the other thing I would like to do is find pictures other people have posted online of the name you have to check it looks right.

I've seen Phals in my local garden center tagged as Phal gigantea, but they were obviously complex hybrids rather than the species. I knew without looking but if I hadn't a quick check of what gigantea looks like would have confirmed it.

No tags- they just have a reference page on their site where you can look up the color you got and see what it's called. So I'm fine calling them NoIDs like I have been. They do look like the Golden Beauty and Nassau orchids I've googled before. The dendrobium is tagged (arigang blue...I corrected my post above. Not a dtps!).

Also look at the original pot and see if it has a grower or distributor name on it. With that and a completely confusing tag in code I was able to find out what one of my formerly NOIDs was. I contacted the company from the pot with the tag information and had it "translated".

Interesting, I've just looked at their site and I see what you mean. Not sure if all their names are registered ones or not. My other concern is that I can see a few on their list which look very similar to each other and it might be hard to tell which you have.

For example I'm not sure I can see the characteristics which distinguish their 'Cambridge' and 'Bern' (Nassau is similar but with a tint of pink from their pictures).

There is also a trend for 'trade names'. These are names of orchids which are not registered but which they are sold under. I have a Cyp Parville which is a trade name for Cyp parviflorum var pubescens. I also have a Den Polar Fire which is used widely as a trade name for this dendrobium... but it's not the registered name, and I don't know what the registered name is.

What I do is mark these ones with the trade name that the seller used, but have a marker in my records that tells me it's a trade name not a registered name.

When I contacted them before this is the response I got (please let me know if I should delete this):

Hello Suzanne,

Glad you like our Orchids! We obtain our young plants from specialized
breeders from Taiwan and Europe. The plant names are commercial names that
these plant breeders use to identify their varieties. As a wholesale grower
we do not know what breeding lines they use. All of our Orchids belong to
the Orchidaceae Phalaenopsis. Hope this answers your question.

And like you said...it's not really easy to distinguish the varieties. I noted in my journal where they from and named them NoIDs in any case (I saw a suggestion somewhere here to name them things like paraNOID...arachNOID...etc. and so I had friends on facebook help me come up with names. It was fun!).

Now I just need to know when this orchid frenzy will settle down. I can't seem to stop. I just placed my first Hausermann order and I really only have the one smallish table for these orchids! I won't need a humidifier at the rate I'm going- there will be so many of them together.

I use Cym. hyb ign. 'name of choice' for any vagabonds which pass through my collection indicating Cymbidium (Phal. Den., etc) hybrid unknown 'cultivar name of choice'. They never stay long as my collection after all these years is comprised of nothing but RHS registered plants or known parent seedlings.

Ahh... sorry, you're hooked. As you have success with reblooming your plants, you will certainly want even more more. Having one orchid is like eating one potato chip...
I have posted reference to this poem before, that I have on my website, graciously contributed by the daughter of a very well - known (and delightful) hybridizer. It's nearly every orchid lover's story...
Obsession

I apologize if this has been covered already but what if you purchase a plant that's only labeled as a seedling from a certain cross? Would an individual be able to register that particular plant with the name of their choosing?
For example, I have a seedling that's labeled Blc. Hawaiian Passion 'Carmela' x B. digbiyana 'Arcadian Alba'
