watering phals, whats best?

They say to soak roots in water for about 15 minutes. How often i use to do it once a month. It seem no matter what i do eventually the leaves get that wittered wrinkled look.
Maybe humidity is the key. Well i place some orchid at the top of a terrarium they seem to do well but eventually i got the wrinkled leaf look.
What is the best way to give phals their water requirement; to avoid root rot from too much watering or moisture , and to avoid underwatering.
Who has long term success and how did you accomplish it?
