Phalaenopsis questions from a newbie in the Philippines

Hello to all Orchid Board members,

Great to find this helpful forum which is good for a beginner like me. It's been a month now since I started buying orchids. I find it relaxing to watch specially their beautiful long lasting flowers. I first bought dendros as they are easily grown here then tried on Phalaenopsis. Last week I bought a phalaenopsis which I think is an old one with a keiki on the flower spike and the good thing is that there are two plants in the pot (total of 3 including the keiki). I bought it even w/o knowing what the color of the flower is because it's really a bargain at 150 pesos (~$3). Anyway, should I divide the two plants? When should the keiki be separated? Kindly help me decide.

Anyway, would a direct morning (upto 11AM) sun be a good thing for the phal?

They grow in shade to bright shade (like underneath the forest canopy, where the leaves and branches of the trees they grow on block out most of the sun). So, no direct sun.

should i repot separating the 2 phals? the media is not in good shape as well.

Hi Ziljian,

If the roots of the keiki are 3 inches or more, you can move it to separate pot. Your Phal looks like a native Philippine specie. If the media is not good, I would suggest to re-pot it immediately. It is better to separate the two phals using two pots.

If it is two separate plants it is best to have them in separate pots.
