Cultural differences between Vandas and Ascocentrums

Hi all,
I would like to gauge your opinion, knowledge, advice, expertise, on the difference in growung Vandas as opposed to growing Ascocentrums. My initial thoughts from looking these up on the net is that they are a bit different with Ascos being a bit more forgiving requireing less light, and heat. What do you guys think? Is it actually easier to grow one as opposed to the other, for someone like me languishing in the North East, USA .

I have my Ascocentrum potted in aliflor. For that reason alone, it's easier than vandas. Vandas are very time-consuming, being the attention-hogs that they are!

Ascos, in general I think, are usually much smaller so that's another + for you

Oh thanks for posting this topic, Tin. I've been wondering this for a while now.
Aren't they also the smaller grower and have lower light requirements?

Sue says they are smaller. I am under the impression also that they require less light. Can someone illuminate us please?

Okay...

Asctm ampullaceum (first thumbnail) is grown in aliflor, in a 6" clear pot with the Catts and the aerial roots are misted daily.

Vanda David Gardner Za Inat (second thumbnail) is grown hanging around the pool, which means it gets only 20% shade from the very bright Florida sun. He gets misted everyday and when the weather gets very hot, that goes to two or three times daily.

They are some of my favorite plants.

I treat my ascocentrums, vandas, and ascocendas about the same, and it is obvious from the color of the leaves ("sun tan") that the asco's can tolerate less light.

Ascocentrums are smaller plants, and that brings smaller flowers with it, but a well-grown specimen can have many inflorescences and carry lots and lots of flowers. Modern ascocenda breeding is increasing the flower size without gaining too much plant size.

Is the Asctm ampullaceum in a normal pot [bottom drainage holes] and if so how do you water it or is it in a semi-hydro pot? It looks very healthy
