I have some sphag growing in a fishbowl on a windowsill. I bought a small baggie of it from a carnivorous plant grower about a year and a half ago - was trying to coax some roots out of a rootless orchid. I figured I would try to 'grow' the rest. I took an old fishbowl and put about 2" of moist peat in the bottom, set the sphag with the small amount of peat it was growing in on top of that. I covered with plastic wrap with a few holes poked in it. It's been growing like crazy in an east facing window.

Most dry sphagnum has enough spores in it that it will grow if given the right conditions, which includes sun, and really pure water. Fertilizer will kill it.

If fertilizer will kill it, does that mean you cannot use live sphag to pot orchids? (Since it will die anyways when you fertilize?)

I think people use live sphagnum with carnivorous plants. fertilizer will kill them as well.

there is some live sphagnum in my drosera pot. not growing too fast though.

I use distilled water for that,
