I do have a Mexipedium in my collection, but it is native to Oaxaca, Mexico and it is not a desert as far as I know. It can tolerate short dry periods between watering, but it won't survive in a desert.

Is the flower very tiny?

It is not FS yet, so I didn't see it blooming. But yes, it is about the size of the medium size coin.
