I just started my death row. Poor little orchids. The new ones are doing okay, give them time, but the Lowe's rescues look like they're getting close to asking for last rites.

I have 7 "Dead Men Walking". I hope the Orchid God grants the mediocalcar, sedirea, and maxillaria a stay of execution.

Two so far, a cattleya that I got at a nursery and a phal I got at Home Depot. I don't feel as bad about the phal because it was in bad shape when I got it. There was a huge dry brown dent in one of the leaves (I think it got burned from water and sun).

Oh, I'd say about 100. I'm a mass murderer though--I kill in multiples as opposed to one or two there. Reasons: ummmmmmmmmmm......potting experiments, overwatering, overpotting, neglect. That's about it. I'll never be an underwaterer.

I feel quite embaressed that the answer is only 3 and those were doomed before I got them as they were sold in tightly packed decaying moss. They never stood a chance and were loosing roots almost imediately. I still have a fourth bought at the same time which has no roots but is still hanging on in water culture.

Not that I haven't come close with others, and one Miltonia is still a question mark. But it's been the help of everyone here which has always pulled them back to life

I killed one Phal when I was a teenager probably a combination between watering issues and temperature.

I haven't killed any orchids yet. But one Phal has slightly floppier leaves than the others from underwatering.

I did, however, lose a discounted Cyclamen recently. It lasted about a week and I was alarmed at its rate of decline. Sometimes it's not always our fault. It sounds like people have a flare for certain types of orchids.

I would think that the more orchids one has (or had), the more difficult the species is to grow in your particular growing area/situation, and the greater "chances" on takes with potting mixtures, etc. should really fairly well jive with the numbers of expired plants one has experienced. Either that or I'm really unlucky and untalented (always a possibility!) lacking that "green" thumb and others just have a better touch with orchids. Still, if one doesn't try, one can't ever even hope to succeed. So, I just keep trying........... (My wife also agrees and says I'm trying too, hummmm, what could she mean by that?)
