Wow, thanks for that video Dave. I was a little surprised to hear Michael say that. I will have to ask him if he was medicated at the time. I wouldn't do that myself and I would think it would take me just as much time if not more to go get the ice as it would to water it a little and I'm too lazy. Good luck with your methods guys.

Rookie Mistake- buying a "Just Add Ice" orchid...

My husband bought me one of these. Its my first orchid and I don't know anything about them. I followed the instructions for about a month and a half and it resulted in a nearly dead plant. I cut away the dead roots( most of the dead stuff was falling off and really gross) and then soaked it in slightly warm water. We'll see what happens. I'll be really upset if it dies. Also, should I get a bigger pot? The roots looked crowded.

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a "Just Add Ice Orchid"? I've never heard of them.

Some orchids are sold with instructions to water them by adding ice cubes once or twice a week.

Not only is the water too cold for the roots, but it also generally does not give enough water either.

CHECK THE POT FOR DRAINAGE HOLES!

I bought one of those too and it was in a bowl. no holes. bad idea. even after i re-potted it it didn't last very long the damage had been done.

So interesting!
I love that Dave is willing to experiment a little. There's no one "right" way to do anything with our chids...everything we've ever read about growing orchids has been the result of someone somewhere experimenting

I thought of trying this method but only when I was thinking of trying my hand at Disa...but I haven't done it yet.

Dave, please keep us posted with your results
