Question Eastern Exposure

Every orchid growing manual suggests using an eastern windowsill for Phals and they only seem to suggest using a shade on the window if it is Southern. The sun shines directly in my Eastern window every morning. Do I need to protect my Phal from the direct morning rays which in the winter last until 10:30 or so?

No, your phals should be fine with the early morning sun.

My Phals are fine in an East window even with bright sun in the mornings here in the UK.

Thanksj for that, I will go ahead then and use the Eastern window, and just keep a close eye on the plants. One factor that may make a difference is that I am at 8,000 ft above sea level, the sun is strong up here.

You might want to let the plants adjust to the brighter sun by moving them slowly closer to the window. Over a couple of weeks time they would be fine.
A second option would be to put up a sheer curtain.

Thanks Bird Song, I am going to be cautious because of the altitude here.
