help with mold on dendrochilum moss
Default help with mold on dendrochilum moss

I have an dendrochilum which is planted in moss. The plant has just started to spike (and there are a lot of spikes-- will more than double the p-bulbs on the plant). Unfortunately I just noticed a fair amount of gray mold has formed on the moss. This moss was not there a week ago.

background: I have had this plant about a year with no mold troubles to date. I water when the moss is drying out which is roughly every 3-4 days. water has 1/4 strength fertilizer just about every time. Now, as it is colder, I have been watering less. These bulbs are the first growth the plant has demonstrated since I got it.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation. I really dont want to disrupt these bulbs.. but obviously dont want to lose the plant either.

help help help.

thanks

Hello!
Mold is sort-of an odd thing to have growing on sphagnum (I assume that's the moss of which you speak) Either there is a distinct lack of airflow, or some type of foreign object is causing it to mold. Just dig out the mold, don't be too concerned with "killing" the new growths, they ought to be fine it you're gentle. Soak the whole deal in a physan-or-similar bath. Really, you could re-pot, as any damage done re-potting will pale in comparison to a heavy case of rot.

I have some pictures here if it helps.. the mold has pretty much taken over.. and fast too!

Im opting for repot but now I am wondering if I should still dip in some type of fungicide before repotting.

I have copper sulfate which I have used successfully on other plants for fungus.. will this work on a chid?

keep the ideas comming in... and thanks so much for those of you who have already helped.
