Default Phal dropping buds

Hi all, new here although I've been lurking awhile.
Having started a new job in the spring at a family run garden center that also sells orchids, I have become addicted.
My collection now consists of 3 dends, 2 paphs, 3 phals, 1 cat and 1 mini phal.
I recently brought home a phal, it was the first orchid that I discovered a spike on and have watched it grow to it's blooming stage. I decided to buy it after checking it's progress every day, I became attatched to it.
The buds are on the small side but since bringing it home, it has started dropping them. I live about a mile from where I work and have taken it from the outdoors under a 50% shade canopy to my west facing sunroom which currently has open windows so the weather conditions should be the same. It is in the middle of the room and not directly in the window. I just can't understand why it's dropping buds. It is one that wasn't originally sold and is now ready to rebloom. On the positive side, it's growing a second spike and is very healthy in every other way and has been repotted within a year. The owner takes her orchids seriously.
Any thoughts as to why the buds are falling off ?

Some orchids really hate moving to a new environment especially when they are in bloom or bud. The bud blast you are experiencing is just the plant getting acclimatized to your sun room. Sometimes just moving them from one side of the house to the other is enough to give you bud blast. The fact that it is growing a new spike is great. That one should bloom just fine for you.

Always check the roots. There might be a hidden problem there. Especially if it's grown in moss.

I recommend that you keep the Phal growing indoors unless you have temperatures that don't drop below 60 F at night or any time during the course of the day. Many Phals (especially the hybrids) don't take to being grown on the cooler side very well.

There are a lot more things to mention, but if you like, you can read my posts in the Article Comments forum, and look at the thread called "Proud New Orchid Owner".

I've pretty much explained as much as I know about growing Phals.

Of course there is also a book by Steven A. Frowine called "Moth Orchids: The Complete Guide to Phalaenopsis"

Phals are notorious for blasting buds when there climate is suddenly changed. Also it is best to keep them out of direct airflow from heating and cooling vents.

I find that moving them so the spike is facing in a different direction can sometimes cause this.Usually after buds are larger and soon to open.

After they start opening it dosent seem to happen for me or when they are still smaller.

This is a common thing for many plants christmas cacti are bad for this too they just dont like to be moved and buds will drop right off if they are at that critical stage.

You probably have everything right and the new spike will be great....LOL its teasing you

Thanks for all the answers.
I guess the move, as well as temp changes at the same time contributed. We're starting to cool down and all my orchids are in for the winter. I keep them outside in the summer. I'm in NC on an island and it's very breezy here, my sunroom gets the wind off the sound. The garden center is more protected from the wind. I probably should've brought it home sooner, I kept telling myself I can enjoy it at work. I finally caved and bought it for my birthday.
I'm going to look for the Kings article and add that it's planted in a bark mixture that the shop owner mixes herself. Thanks again.
