Default back again-update and advice plz

Hello all

Iv not been on in a while been on a training course for work and its been constant and hectic. Rare couple of days off so just thought i would update.

Weather has turned horrible and gettin colder and duller 😢

All my orchids have lost their flowers apart from 2 of my noid phals.

My oncidium has lost all but the spike is still green what should i do and should i take the big stem off my dendrobium or leave for now?

Oh and excitingly as im new, i trimmed all my phals spikes that had died off and 2 have new spikes starting since i moved them to my colder room!

It is unlikely the oncidium or dendrobium spikes will rebloom, so they may be removed.

Your phalaenopsis may have responded to the "chill" by spiking, but they are "hot growers" in nature, so will do much better if grown as warm as possible.

Cut old the oncidium spike as close to where it comes out of the parent pseudobulb as possible. Sterilize your blade before making the cut.

As for the Dendrobium - better post a photo first. Different kinds of Dens bear blooms in different manners. Some have one or a few long spikes with lots of flowers, originating at the tip of the cane-like pseudobulb or from above a leaf. You can cut this spike where it originates near the pseudobulb.

Others bear single to few flowers on multiple short stems originating where leaves grew or grow, all up and down the cane-like pseudobulb. Some people cut these bloomed pseudobulbs to the base and others leave them.

I always wait until the spikes turn brown before cutting.
With Dendrobiums, the old canes will often bloom so do not remove those.
