Thank you everyone for the great replies. I just cut the stems and threw out the roots.

Is it normal for a orchid to die in only 6 weeks? Is it possible it was starting to rot prior to purchaset? I can't believe my first orchid died so quickly

The things holding the orchids to the wire are tiny claw clips, they were on the orchid when I got it.

No, it's not normal for an orchid to die so quickly after purchase. It may have retained damage already prior to you buying it.

I wanted to know what the leaves and the tufts of moss being held up by the clips that were attached to the stakes holding up your orchid's flower spikes were. I realize they're held up by clips.

No it's not normal, but it does happen, even if some of the plant and blooms look healthy, and especially at box retailers that buy from nurseries that use straight moss. The moss holds too much water and the plants dies from the roots up. Normally by the time you start noticing trouble, the plant is on its way downhill.

Opps sorry, the other stuff was just tufts of moss tied on with string.

The store it was purchased from is a reputable florist and they sell a lot of orchids, it's in a upscale area and the prices are usually ridiculous. My Mum paid $175 for the orchid, I'm upset she spent so much for a orchid that died 2 months later.

Wow, then I'm surprised it died so quickly if it was indeed from a reputable seller. I'm surprised a good orchid seller uses straight sphag, but I have seen it before. If this is the case, then I'd take it back to them. They might just say it was your fault in overwatering/care, but it's worth the chance. You also have photos of what was going wrong. You may have also just bought a phal that had rotting roots from the get-go.

I think I will go see the florist, I did contact them at first signs of damage so they know I had problems with the plant from the get go.

Well Good Luck then Krystal. Hopefully they'll refund you or maybe at least give you a brand new in spike phal... Maybe even both. Let us know how it turns out, and good luck with your next one!

Phalaenopsis of that caliber (price) should not meet the fate that yours did.

If I'm paying $175 for one orchid (not worth it, most of my plants individually don't even cost that much), it better be immortal and like awesomely beautiful and flawless. No offense to the seller. But I think the price reflects the cost of the time that went into the packaging not the actual plant itself.

Most NOID hybrid Phalaenopsis cost $10 to $25, sometimes way less.

WOW, my orchid looks EXACTLY LIKE THAT ORCHID. In the second pic. It lost one leaf, and mine is in bark. Also, mine hasn't dropped any blooms, and it's looked like this for a month. What happened to mine?

What, you mean your plant has a badly damaged root system? As in it's so badly damaged your plant doesn't have any roots left?

Phals grow very slow btw. It'll put out 1-2 maybe 3 leaves in one year. Usually all during the mid-spring to mid-fall months.
