Will Orchids Survive Our Trip Female
Default Will Orchids Survive Our Trip

We are travelling in late July through Alberta. I have an opportunity to go to Paramount Orchids I would like to purchase several plants but my dilemena is this. We have to purchase the plants on Sunday(they only sell retail on the weekends) but our plane does not go back home until Friday. We are staying in a cabin for several days in Banff , then another cabin in Jasper and finally a hotel stay in Calgary. I was wondering if the orchids will handle all the different changes to their environment?
Any thoughts on this???

I heart Paramount orchids. Can't you pick out your plants while you're there and then have them deliver to you once you've returned home? It might not hurt the orchids but it won't help them, and worrying about them might interfere with your vacation!

Chips, I agree. Have them shipped, if they will do it. If that is not possible, I know a lot of people who buy them at shows and need to hand carry them. For an orchid lover there is always a way.

I don't think the change in environment is a huge problem. At the very worst, any plants you buy in bloom might blast, but that's it. I travel a lot with my orchids since I'm from france but study in the netherlands. I usually bring home the mounted orchids for x-mas or easter, and they don't mind taking the plane, staying in lyon, going to the countryhouse, coming back to lyon and then taking the plane again. All of that in the space of 10-15 days. So I think you orchids will be just fine.

Like Camille, I doubt there would be any significant stress on the plants, but it might be a lot more convenient for you to have them shipped about the time you return home.

Thanks for the suggestions. I originally ordered orchids from Paramount and asked them to ship to Ontario but the shipping cost was ridiculous. So I cancelled the order. I am not really worried about the inconvience, just the health of the orchid. I am not worried about bud blast, the plant will recover?? I was just worried if the plant itself would be stressed and not recover.

When one imports plants from overseas, it is common for them to be bare-root, in a box, for as much as 2 weeks. A little recovery time and they are usually fine.
