ROOT OR SPIKE? Female
Default ROOT OR SPIKE?

So I have basically never had my orchids spike, but I have only been doing this orchid thing for about a year.

On one of my phals it dropped its last leaf about 2 weeks ago and the stem is still fairly green. This morning before I left for work and was doing my morning watering and inspection I noticed this little red/ green thing coming out half way up the crown under the leaves. Is it a spike or a root? I can't tell and seeing I have never seen the start of a spike I have no idea.

That's a root. A spike looks like a little mitt, not smooth like that. But still, a root is a very good sign that your plant is healthy and happy. You may see a spike yet!

Yes, that looks like a root. Phals never grow a spike twice from the same spot. But roots are good, you need them to have a stronger plant to bloom next time!
