New Babies

I just received six new plants through mail order from Clouds Nursery in Jordan Station in Ontario. They arrived in small 2-3 inch pots and are young plants. I have never bought such a young plants before. Should I repot them? Give them time to adjust in their own pots? Some of them have roots hanging out the bottom and tops.

You'll get different answers, becos' everyone has their own way of taking care of their new arrivals.

I like to give them a few days to get adjusted to the new area - I do not put them with any other plants or orchids. I set aside time to get a good look at the leaves and roots. I quickly check them for any insects/ pests and water if needed. They go under dimmer lights then my other greens for a couple of days.
I always repot no matter what. I'm a firm believer to get them in the media that you grow best in.

Don't rush anything, give it all some time to get adjusted.

I was really happy with my order from Clouds overall. Just one Oncindium had some black spots on it leaves near the crown(fungus?) I isolated the plant in my west window sill. The other plants were a lot bigger than I expected, I even had a Milotonia with stem/buds. I probably give them a week, then repot as I like a bark mix. What size pots do I move to since they are so small?

Black spots on oncidiums are just from high light, its nothing to worry about.

I would let your new plants acclimate for a while. Unless they are absolutely positively climbing out of their pots, I would let them be.

I would say the spots are just humidity spots. You can find tiny pots at big box stores or gardening stores. Do you have a photo? I've had baby orchids before, and I just let them grow until they told me they needed new pots by growing out of their old ones. Kind of like hermit crabs but different.

This is one of my new babies with the spots. I hope it is just from too much light since it is near the crown.

Not all spots are from high light - I wish that were the case, life would be easier

Chips, you could go up a pot size. I like to allow 30% inside space for new growth.
The bulbs look very dark in color much like the leaves. I would spray the whole plant down with a fungicide and fan them dry.
Keep air flowing around you're orchids, this will help future beak outs.

I was suspecting a bit of fungas myself. They were tightly wrapped in newspaper and a bit wet. What fungicide would you recommend?

Also I see you are from Quebec. Have you ever tried to order plants from Bedford Orchids? I emailed a request but he has not got back to me, I wonder if they are still in business.

Call him, thats the best way to reach him. I've not brought from him as of yet.

About the fungicide - I like to use sulphur a wettable powder form, this way I can use a small about of paste and not have to mix up a large batch of fungicide. You can also use Physan 20
